THE JOHNNYS with support from The Bads @ Leigh Sawmill Cafe
Sep 30 @ 5:30 pm

Australian cowpunk legends The Johnnys are making their long-awaited return to Aotearoa this September for their first national tour in twenty eight years.

With a fistful of foot-stomping tunes tucked under their belts, the rough riding band struck gold with their 1986 album Highlights Of A Dangerous Life spurring numerous chart hits in New Zealand and Australia, and party-starting sets at legendary local venues The Gluepot and Warners. The tour is being held in tribute to their ill bandmate, guitarist Spencer P. Jones (also of Beasts of Bourbon), who sadly won’t be crossing the ditch to join the trio of Graham HoodSlim Doherty and Billy Pommer Jr.

THE BADS are sawmill favourites, with their effortlessly cool poppin’ rockin’ country tunes – the perfect support act for this gig!

Dunedin music icon Martin Phillipps has gathered together the latest iteration of his band The Chills for an extensive nationwide tour this September and October in support of their latest studio album Snow Bound, the group’s first long player since 2015’s Silver Bullets. With so many classic tunes under his belt it’s impossible to pick favourites from Phillipps’ mighty oeuvre, which stretches back to 1982’s foundational Dunedin Double EP on Flying Nun Records, needless to say the songs of The Chills are close to the hearts of countless New Zealanders.

PRINCESS CHELSEA @ Leigh Sawmill Cafe
Oct 27 @ 9:30 pm – 10:30 pm

Princess Chelsea at the Sawmill CafeThe Loneliest Girl NZ tour

This will be the first time Princess Chelsea has performed to New Zealand audiences in three years. It sees Chelsea and her band return home after an extensive “Planet Earth” circuit of the U.K, Europe and Korea. “I’ve got some new band members, which is pretty cool,” she says “and we have spent the last three months tightening our live set before touring the album…

Chelsea’s trademark arrangements featuring classic 80’s Synths (Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50), ambient guitars, and orchestral instruments are all here but are presented in a more refined and simple manner than on her previous releases.

It sounds like a record made by a lover of pop music across all genres from 60’s girl groups to 80’s power ballads, and late 80’s acid house to 90s pop. Like her earlier work, adult issues are presented in a humorous and sometimes childlike manner, and this juxtaposition rather than softening the blow makes jarring social commentary hit harder.
